Dead interesting: Toxteth Park Cemetery walking tour

Fancy something a bit different? This weekend take a guided tour around Liverpool's oldest resting place and learn why it's one of the most impressive in the region.

We’ve all thought it. “I’m sick of doing all my food shopping and chores of a weekend! I wish I was doing something outside! I wish I was in Toxteth Park Cemetery!”

Well, you’re in luck, because this Saturday there’s a special guided tour across our city’s famous resting place. Joking aside, Toxteth Park Cemetery (also known as Smithdown Road Cemetery) is genuinely intriguing and beautiful, and it’s got some solid history too: Grade II listed, it was the very first municipal cemetery in Liverpool, opened in 1856.

The tour, provided by the newly-formed Friends of Toxteth Cemetery group, will guide you across the area, where you’ll see the headstones and obelisks of its most well-known residents, learn about the park’s history, as well as see the rather impressive war memorial. More interesting than a Saturday morning trawling Tesco for tomatoes, right?
