In 1936 socialists and communists from all over the world headed to Spain to fight fascism.

Of the thousands of men and women who fought Franco in the Spanish Civil War, 179 known volunteers were from Merseyside with 27 of them losing their lives.

To help commemorate the 75th anniversary of their sacrifice, The Crosby Plaza Cinema, with support from Marlene Sidaway, President of International Brigade Memorial Trust and Liverpool man Danny Payne will host an event, which will include food and wine, songs from The Liverpool Socialist Choir, an exhibition, memorabilia from people who fought there and a film.

The film Land & Freedom, loosely based on George Orwell’s memoir Homage to Catalonia, tells the story of the Civil War through the eyes of a young man from Liverpool who travels to fight with the International Brigade.

Along with a free glass of Spanish wine and tapas, the evening promises a fascinating insight into Liverpool’s and Merseyside’s past.
