All that and mackem heroes The Futureheads and The Lancashire Hotpots, purveyors of comedy folk that remind us a little of our own Half Man Half Biscuit and Loose Moose String Band. There’s a hell of a lot more besides, including Owls*, Dead Cities (above), The Wild Eyes (below) and The Loud.

Which is why we’re giving you the chance to see some of our favourite acts at the Southport music festival, which kicks off over a weekend in early July.

Southport Rocks really does sound like something off the beaten track to us. Formerly The Jedi Festival, the event was launched in 2007 in memory of Chris Haw and all profits will go to The Vital Sounds Foundation, screening young people against Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.

There will be glamping and Mongolian yurts, we’re told. Alternative and Dance Music Stages will showcase local talent, while there’ll also be acoustic acts, DJ sets, evening comedy performances, outdoor climbing walls, cage football, face painting, a vintage market, a homeopathic tent…

Visitors are free to come and go as they please, meaning you won’t be trapped inside the sort of steel cages music festivals seem to go in for these days.

Tickets for Southport Rocks start from £15 for a single day ticket and up to £49 for a weekend ticket including camping.
