Warpaint Live: The Review

Warpaint at the Kazimier - the perfect start to this year's Liverpool Music Week.

WarpaintLiverpool Music Week got off to an encouraging start on Saturday night, ushered in with some verve by LA four-piece Warpaint.

The all girl line up played to an appreciative packed house at our favourite hipster Mecca, The Kazimier, rewarding the expectations of some and the curiosity of others, with a confident and engaging performance.

Falling somewhere satisfyingly in between the blissed out melodies of Beach House and the psych rock of Sleepy Sun, Warpaint employ layered vocals and sexy, swoonsome guitars to great effect, making it easy to understand why their star is finally set on an upward trajectory.

Offering little by way of banter with the crowd they more than got by on an easy, ethereal cool, epitomised best by new single ‘Undertow’ coming four songs into the set. It speaks volumes that a fair amount of those present knew it well enough to sing along.

The set closed with old favourite, Elephants, and when the band returned to rapturous applause for an encore, we were treated to a full-on wig out and a switcheroo with new drummer Stella Mozgawa ending up on guitar showing the others how it’s done.

Having already completed impressive support slots with the likes of The XX and Yeasayer, this gig proved beyond any doubt that Warpaint are a headlining act, and the perfect trailblazer for this year’s Liverpool Music Week. We only hope what’s to follow can live up to the standard thrown down by the girls of Warpaint.

Definitely try and catch them next time they’re in town, they’ve got great chemistry and a real presence.
