Radar: Wooden Shjips

Dreamy west coast doodling from Wooden Shjips this September, as they play their first ever gig in the city.

Who: San Francisco dreamers, Wooden Shjips’ woozy cocktail of psyched-out, stripped down, experimental garage rock blends spacey west-coast drone with angular east-coast rock. And does it with just a soupcon of mysticism on the side. Think Hawkwind meets the Velvet Underground. And then go outside and get some air. They’re touring their first ever, proper album, West, which is - suitably - dripping in all manner of West Coast tropes and treats. Well, they’re not named after a Crosby, Stills and Nash song for nothing. Good to see those boys at Harvest Sun have snagged them.

Where: The Kazimier, Wolstenholme Square

With: Liverpool’s dependably excellent Mugstar and San Francisco’s rather wonderful shimmering pop merchants, The Fresh and Onlys.

When: 6 September

Author: David Lloyd
07 August 2011
Fresh & new

Review: Bravo Figaro!

— A very different kind of show from Mark Thomas is a beautiful piece of work that doesn't patronise his father's illness, not ignore his frailties, as they connect over a love of opera.
