Radar: Spotlight Kid at MOJO

Nottingham's bliss-prog outfit Spotlight Kid are yet another reason to look towards Mojo for some of the city's most exciting gigs these days.

Who: We admit it, we have a soft spot for Nottingham’s Spotlight Kid - as we did for co-vocalist Katty Heath’s Bent before. Purveyors of shimmering, chord-soaked shoegaze and trancey indie, they know their way around an insistent, slowly building space pop gem. And we have them firmly marked in the ones to watch category.

We spoke to other singer, Rob McCleary to give you the Spotlight Kid crash course.

What’s your manifesto?: To infiltrate the pop masses and put some life back into the ‘dying’ guitar scene.

Is it wrong to use the S(hoegaze) word these days?: We are a mix of ethereal guitars with pop songs. We like a catchy chorus as much as we like a sonic assault of guitar feedback. It’s a mix of M83, My Bloody Valentine and other bands that begin with “M” that I can’t think of at this moment.

What can we expect live?: Full on fireworks, we definitely don’t spend our time staring at our shoes! I am usually attempting to climb something or someone from about three seconds into the set. Live is where we are at our most comfortable and where we can unleash all of our energy as a band. Katty has got this amazing presence that can pull you in from the back of the room. It’s an intense affair but you will get your money’s worth.

Where: Mojo, Back Berry Street

When: 17 October
