Delta Maid: Mersey delta blues

If the Dixie Chicks came from Dingle...Meet Delta Maid. Her roots are showing...

Summer’s set to be busy for Liverpool singer-songwriter, Delta Maid - festivals, gigs and support slots cram the calendar from now til the clocks go back (and, let’s face it, the nights are drawing in, now). Tonight, Delta Maid supports Australian outfit, The Middle East, at Manchester’s excellent Deaf Institute. We’re going. But we’re really looking forward to catching Delta Maid’s rootsy, country-tinged set - soon to be aired on her Broken Branches EP.

Call it country, call it folk, call it whatever you like, Delta Maid’s stripped-back aesthetics showcase a welcome blast of attitude-free honesty - and, unlike many of her contemporaries, she knows her way around a nagging melody, too.

“Coming from Liverpool, roots music is genetically bred,” she’s said.

The title track and ‘Any Way I Want To’ were produced by Liam Watson at London’s fabled Toerag Studios, an analogue-only enclave loved by the White Stripes, the Cribs and the Kills. And that warm fuzzy feeling is shot through this set of Louisiana blues meets Lucinda Williams gravel.

Trust us, when she sings “I’m gonna sleep with the light on/I’m gonna drink in the afternoon,” SevenStreets ain’t about to argue.

Broken Branches is out on Polydor Records on 16 July
