Music Lessons: Vasco Da Gama

Part two of our week-by-week partwork, assembling a full scale model of the Liverpool music scene. Watch it grow...

Who are they?

Consisting of John Crawford, Chris Lynn, David Kelly and Joe Falconer, Vasco Da Gama are one of the leading proponents of math-rock in Liverpool having supported the likes of Errors, Los Campesinos and Tera Melos as well as headlining their own raucous shows.

Why we approve

Having played a large number of shows over the last few years, Vasco Da Gama have become a fiercely proficient live unit, something that is unbelievably essential yet frustratingly rare in this punchy form of rock music.

Playing with this level of confidence and professionalism allows for greater showmanship too, which gives Vasco the edge over many a young progressive band staring at their feet on stage.

In short, if you like your pop songs proggy and your prog songs poppy then Vasco Da Gama are your guys.

Sound bite

“Math-rock suggests it’s very calculated and contrived, which is the opposite for our music”. - John Crawford in Bido Lito!

Awesome band. Despite a few months off and some tuning delays they were v. good at Shipping Forecast the other week. Always look forward to catching them… Math Rock is a convenient label, but I agree it’s not quite right. Post Rock is another one, but that’s also a bit nebulous… it’s a hard band to tie down, you just need to go and see them live!

Norwegian electronica of the top drawer variety. Lindstrom is in town next month. And he's a new album named after his favourite foods. Tasty, tasty. He's very very tasty.
