Eux Autres - tres bien

Will Fitzpatrick looks forward to Those Others at Mello Mello.

‘Those others’, apparently, although that self-deprecating name frankly does a disservice to one of the best-kept secrets in American indie.

Eux Autres describe their sound as “the unrequited love song Doug Martsch would have penned for Francoise Hardy,” but it’s also reminiscent of alternative favourites like Best Coast, Belle & Sebastian and The Vaselines. They make their first Liverpool appearance tomorrow night at Mello Mello.

Nebraska siblings Heather and Nicholas Larimer made up the original line-up, recording the albums Hell Is Eux Autres and Cold City along the way. In 2008 they added former Aislers Set drummer Yoshi Nakamato - to “keep the peace” - and, more recently, bassist Ethan Jones to their number.

New album Broken Bow offers more dreamily-elegant classic pop, only further refined and with a real sense that this is a band in the ascendance. There aren’t enough songs out there about sport or military history, let alone ones that’ll make you want to put the whole album on repeat forever.

In short, Eux Autres are here for your hearts and your minds. You’d do well to let them take both.

Bien sur.
