Vinyl call: Never Records and Philip Jeck at The Bluecoat

Liverpool's experimental music legend Philip Jeck calls time on one of the Biennial's most interesting projects...

Philip Jeck As you can tell from reading SevenStreets, we’ve been rather enjoying this year’s Biennial. One of the most impressive strands was from No Longer Empty, a New York based group who take empty sites and make them, er, not empty. Read our SevenStreets interview with ‘em here. They pitched up at Never Records - a makeshift gig venue and record store-meets-installation based in a disused building on Seel Street. Helmed by NYC artist Ted Riederer (read our interview here) and playing host to the likes of Liverpool bands Hot Club de Paris and Mugstar amongst others, their live sets were cut directly to vinyl and sold within the shop over the following days. Great idea, huh?

Sadly the experiment’s coming to an end, but it’s going out with a (crackly) bang. Avant garde hero Philip Jeck, who resides in the city, is performing one of his renowned live sets at the Bluecoat. Jeck creates ghostly, immersive soundscapes using turntables and vinyl - only this time, he’s using the ones recorded at Never Records as the basis for his performance. Slowed down, manipulated and looped to infinity, Jeck’s live sets are mesmerising, and this rare appearance next month is well worth ditching your office Christmas party for (lets face it, you’ll only end up drinking too much Bacardi and making a tit of yourself anyway).
