Son shine: Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, The Kazimier

The son of heroic Afrobeat star Fela Kuti brings his legendary Egypt 80 band to Liverpool Music Week. It's also something of a homecoming...

Seun KutiFela Kuti was one of music’s greatest. A pioneer, radical and controversial visionary, his funk-fuelled Afrobeat introduced thousands of outsiders to the wonders of African music. Not content with being an acclaimed musician and bandleader, Fela also set up Kalakuta Republic: a slightly bonkers mixture of commune, recording studio and home for the extended family of musicians in his band, as well as forming his own political party. And juggling 12 wives. All in a day’s work, right?

Following his death in the 90s, youngest son Seun Kuti became leader of Femi’s epic backing band Egypt 80. An acclaimed musician in his own right, he brings the 16 piece group - whose ages range from 30 to 70 - to the Kazimier this winter for a night of Afrobeat and experimental fun as part of Liverpool Music Week.

It’s a double celebration for Seun, too - he came to study here at LIPA a few years ago. We’re not exactly sure how Toxteth compared to the Kalakuta Republic, but this semi-homecoming should be a joyous one.
