Radar: Balkanarama at the Kazimier

The Balkan-themed knees-up returns to the Kaz this weekend for another riotous, unmissable night of folky fun.

If you’ve experienced a few nights at the Kazimier, you’ll know that despite the cutting edge dance music and indie that passes through its doors, its heart is rooted in folk music. Not just any kind of folk - the sort of joyfully fun, honest, slightly shambolic, Eastern European party music that’s been the soundtrack to many a messy night there.

This Saturday, the brilliant Balkanarama heads back to Wolstenholme Square. Following last May’s shindig, this year it’s bigger, better, and more Balkan-er. Bombastic 10 piece band Smash Kafana headline, who’ll run through a set of life-affirming folk and klezmer trad for the Kazimier hoardes.

In addition to that, you’ll also find traditional gypsy belly-dancing (which we’re promised is ‘breathtaking’ - they clearly haven’t seen us in action), Balkan Beats DJs, live visuals, potent Turkish coffee - oh, and free home-made brandy tasting. Recommended.
