Last Stand Festival

Can a music and culture festival, staged by a local community, really defeat plans for a massive supermarket in the area? The Last Stand Festival aims to do just that.

Music and popular protest have a rich history together. Think Vietnam. Think Band Aid. Think Sainsbury’s in Crosby.

Because that’s just what The Last Stand Festival, taking place this weekend, is all about. Local businesses and people up in the North End are coming together for a celebration of local music, art, fashion and food to emphasise the fact that community starts at home.

The group behind the festival are protesting against Sainsburys’ plans to build a massive new supermarket on Moor Lane, with a decision due from the Planning Committee by mid-August.

The festival stems from the ABetterCrosby group, which wants Sainsbury’s to develop the Village more sympathetically, pointing to two Art Deco buildings it says will be demolished to make way for the new store.

Local independent traders have their own view on what a massive Sainsbury’s store would do for the area – it’s called the Last Stand Festival after all – but there are plenty of events designed to show off local talent too.

So, apparently, there is such a thing as society. Head down on 31 July for a day of events, and make your presence felt.

Let us hope that the festival is an outstanding success, and the message gets through to the planning people, that we don’t want what Sainsburys is proposing, but we would like a store slightly bigger, but without demolishing Glen Buildings etc……
