Burning down the house: Ital at Shipping Forecast

You might have seen Daniel Martin-McCormick shaking down the foundations of Static Gallery a couple of years ago with his scratchy noise-punk band Mi Ami. Since then, the Brooklyn-via-San Francisco chap has turned his hand to dance music: his take on classic house, recorded under the name Ital, has seen his profile soar in the past year.

It’s much more than a painfully ironic pastiche though: his music playfully picks at the seams of house music, reforming it and reworking it with off-kilter surprises. It sounds fresh and just a little bit wrong: drum machines and keyboards butting heads with Whitney Houston and Lady Gaga samples. Legendary dance label Planet Mu saw its potential: earlier this year they released his debut album ‘Hive Mind’ to critical acclaim.

Visiting the Shipping Forecast this month courtesy of new promoters Deep Hedonia, it’s a solid supporting bill as well: Isocore, backbone of local electronic music stalwarts UpItUp, is set to showcase a live analogue set of his squelchy, belchy techno. Wirral boy Forest Swords makes a rare appearance to spin songs in between bands, as do the Hive Collective who’ll also be doing their trademark brilliant/poo-your-pants-terrifying visuals.
