Beard here now: Other Lives at Leaf

Oklahoma's best new exports visit Bold Street this weekend for some swirling folk fun. Plus: win tickets to the gig!

Other Lives
One again this coming weekend, local promoters Harvest Sun bring a rather special band to the city.

You might not have heard of Oklahoma quintet Other Lives yet, but you will do soon - they’re tipped for rather great things over the next couple of years, and their dusty, soothing folk-rock (think Fleet Foxes with even more heart-bashing harmonies) has been wooing crowds and critics across the globe. Second album ‘Tamer Animals’ pastoral orchestration and chest-thumping stomp brings to mind all the best bits of Midlake, Beirut and even Arcade Fire. Basically, it’s the perfect music for facing a windy autumn head on.

Last month they were honing their live set on a tour with Bon Iver, so we’re in for a treat when they roll up in town this Saturday. Not only that, fans of beards might like to notice that Other Lives gain an impressive 80% facial hair tally (sadly scuppered by the band’s female member, Jenny).

Fresh & new

Review: Bravo Figaro!

— A very different kind of show from Mark Thomas is a beautiful piece of work that doesn't patronise his father's illness, not ignore his frailties, as they connect over a love of opera.
