Biennial Radar: Open Eye Gallery

Unflinching and essential, the Open Eye gallery is the home of great photography in the north. So we can expect illumination for the Biennial. Or can we?

It’s almost made us love Mann Island. Open Eye’s new home is a triumph, and reason enough to risk your life crossing the Strand. Since its opening, a year ago, it’s staged some of the city’s most engaging exhibitions - so we’re in no doubt its Biennial offering is going to be another must see. We asked them to talk us through what’s going on beneath the black triangles…

What’s Happening?

Kohei Yoshiyuki’s twin projects Love Hotel and The Park (pic). These controversial shows ignited furious debate about photography, voyeurism and sexual politics when first shown in Japan in the 1970’s.

In the 1st floor gallery we have the UK premier of Mark Morrisroe’s Late Photograms. Morrisroe was a driving force in Boston’s 1980s punk scene. He sadly died from an AIDS related illness in 1989 and this work is an exploration of his identity and sexuality.

We also have a brand-new, large scale commission from Sinta Tantra.

Well you won’t be able to miss Sinta Tantra’s work, as it will be taking pride of place on our external walls.

Amazing Art Fact

One of our exhibitions is to be viewed in the dark. Visitors will be given a torch upon entry and left to explore what’s within.

Lots! The artists talk with Sinta Tantra on 15th September (oops!), our family day on 29th September and our photographers Network event on 16th October all promise to be great events. Check the website for more details.
