Lunch of the Week: The Oldest Shop Front in Liverpool?

The question mark is there because maybe you know differently - but our research says that the title goes to McGuffie’s on Castle Street. The store opened in 1900 as a chemists, and continued dispensing right through to the early 90′s, when it was bought by Boots.

A couple of sandwich shops later, and it’s now a nice little bar and patisserie - serving baked on the premises pastries every day, paninis, coffees, beers and wine.

“We’re revamping it into a small lounge and wine bar, but committed to keeping all its history alive,” says new owner Robert Mogsa. “There’s an amazing tiled mosaic from an Italian who came to Liverpool many years ago,” he adds, revealing that the premises are about to be used as a location in a film shot by the makers of Fast and Furious. Somehow, a Mitsubishi Eclipse just wouldn’t look right outside the mullioned windows of this Castle Street gem. Let’s hope they’ve change for the parking metres, this art nouveau treat’s a place that’s definitely worth a leisurely lunch.
