The Elusive Power of Nature

Phil Dowling's bold and energetic work creates a lively diversion to south Liverpool

Liverpool artist Phil Dowling’s been trying to capture it for 30 years - we’d say he’s come pretty darn close, if his new retrospective at Garston Art Works is anything to go by. Vividly realised, and emotionally charged, Dowling’s work aims high. For him, insipid watercolours don’t come close - he’s all about capturing the energy, mood and emotion of landscapes. And, whether it’s Hoylake or the Highlands, Dowling’s dramatic work has energy to spare.
