Working-Class Heroes

A new production of The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists starts at The Everyman this month

One of our favourite books, The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists tells the story of a group of decorators in the early 20th Century, worked hard by grinding employers and forever fearful of unemployment.

One-part Dickens, one-part Marx and one-part DH Lawrence it’s a stunning bittersweet story that doesn’t let one of the greatest explanations of socialists philosophy get in the way of the petty, tragic and involving stories of its main characters.

This new production, by Howard Brenton, is directed by Christopher Morahan and runs between 17 June to 10 July at The Everyman.
