What better way of welcoming in the Autumn – harvest festivals, Autumn Equinox and Hallow’een – than with a scarecrow competition?

While there probably are much better ways, it’s pleasing to know that such things still go on in England, and you can visit one in the North Liverpool suburb of Waterloo this weekend.

Author Frank Cottrell Boyce will, somewhat bizarrely, be on hand to judge the best scarecrow of the day, but there will also be all manner of family events on, including: Sea Cadets; Tai Chi and martial arts demonstrations; a sunflower competition; and all those old stand-bys for such events - tombolas, book stalls and cakes.

The RSPB will be doing a guided walk around the marine lakes, while a new play-park and a new bog garden will be opened on the day.

The event is organised by The Friends of Waterloo Seafront Gardens, which aims to restore the beautiful marine gardens.

Head along, buy some jam, guess the weight of a pumpkin and be freaked out by a scarecrow. See you there.
