Pop-up shop alert: Percy Gulliver’s Printshop and Social

Local designer Gary McGarvey has opened up his own shop in the city's Ropewalks, bringing a temporary treasure trove to beloved Bold Street.

We’ve covered Gary McGarvey before, who’s the creative mind behind travelling gig poster exhibition Screenadelica and design company Horse. This Christmas he’s stepping things up a notch, as he’s just opened his own shop. Y’know, as you do.

We’re fully into the idea of pop-up shops: empty spaces should be used to their full potential, especially in a Tough Economic Climate Or Whatever We’re Calling It Nowadays. Sure, pop-ups have been co-opted by huge brands eager to push products (Muller yoghurt managed to blag a space on Church Street a few months ago), but its temporary nature allows for some impressive ideas to be realised.

That’s where Percy Gulliver’s Printshop and Social comes in. Helmed by McGarvey, it’s part store, music venue and exhibition space. In the shop you’ll find stocked goods by some of the city’s best artists and craftspeople, from jewellers to t-shirt designers and printmakers, all housed on Bold Street in the heart of the city’s Ropewalks, and handpicked by Gary himself. So you won’t find any Christmas tat, basically: this is all quality, unique stuff.

We’re told over the next few weeks there’ll also be DJs and bands performing while you browse for that perfect present (or, alternatively, just buy a load of amazing stuff for yourself). You’re not going to get that mooching around a sweaty WH Smiths, are you?

(Image above is taken from local online television channel BayTV, who’ve done a piece on the shop - click here to watch).
