Review

The Merseyside Maritime Museum is a vast exhibition space over four floors of the Albert Dock looking at Liverpool’s relationship with the sea in terms of mercantilism, leisure, war and emigration.

The Maritime Museum’s displays take in Liverpool’s history as a port of global significance and the ramifications of the city’s mercantile past, the Battle of the Atlantic, a permanent interactive customs and excise exhibit, a gallery of maritime art and models and displays on the Liverpool-built Titanic, Lusitania and Empress.

The range of the exhibits and the sheer size of the museum means that an entire day can be spent browsing the many and varied displays.

The Maritime Museum also offers access to its Maritime Archives and Library and stages tours of Liverpool’s subterranean Old Dock and the Edmund Gardner pilot boat.

Alongside the extensive static features are frequent seasonal displays. Recent exhibitions have looked at Shackleton’s ill-fated Endurance voyage to the south pole and a wide-ranging look at Liverpool’s history as a city and a major global port.

The Maritime Museum boasts a gift shop, the rather basic Quayside Cafe and the plush fourt-floor Maritime Dining Rooms, which offers meals, snacks and high tea - alongside views across the Albert Dock and Mersey - you can read our review of the latter here.
