What did the Wirral look like 100 years ago? This book will show you.

Ever drive down a familiar road that different somehow and find yourself utterly unable to figure out what’s changed?

Look around Liverpool city centre and the landscape has changes beyond all recognition in some areas; quite literally in some cases, people who were once familiar with the city can find themselves lost amid the Liverpool Ones and Met Quarters in Liverpool.

Look across the water and the change may not be quite so dramatic, but you can bet there’ll be plenty of people who can chart the passage of time by the changing urban sprawl.

Helpfully a book has come along to help us understand how the Wirral has developed over the years. Did you know, for example, that it was the location for the pivotal battle Brunanburh in AD937 when the Saxons came together to repel Scottish, Welsh and Viking invaders?

Sadly there weren’t any snappers around to capture that scene, but Wirral Then and Now can give us an insight into how the area looked at the start of the 20th century with a series of images of landmarks and key buildings over the water.

Take a look at the pics in the book and try and figure out what they’ll look like in another 100 years’ time.
