Radar: Poetry in Lark Lane

September’s traditionally the month for learning new things, yeah? Try this. The Villainelle Club is something a little different. A poetry night hosted by Holdfire Press, a local poetry publisher. Each night brings some of the UK’s best poets to read in Liverpool. Never tried it before, why not give it a go? It’s hosted by Michael Egan, author of the excellent Steak and Stations collection (loosely based around Liverpool and the northwest) and well worth seeking out, in SevenStreets’ opinion, and the man behind Holdfire press.

You can read an interview with him here, where he talks about his Envelope project: “Envelope is a reaction to being skint but wanting to do a magazine. It’s six poems by six poets, handwritten on the inside of an Envelope,” he says. Brilliant.

“This month brings three of the North West’s most established experimental poets; Robert Sheppard, Scott Thurston and Tom Jenks,” Egan tells SevenStreets.

“Robert is Professor of Poetry and Poetics at Edge Hill University while Scott and Tom run Manchester’s vibrant Other Room with James Davies. We’ll also be welcoming Andy Brown all the way from Exeter. Andy’s work is described by Luke Kennard as ‘Lyrical precision and infinite jest, as funny and curious as it is poignant and moving.’
