Tree of life: Young Pines unveil debut exhibition at LSAD

As many of you will know first hand, graduates have it bloody tough nowadays. If you’re a creative graduate, however, it can be even worse: it’s a viciously competitive marketplace even without the doom and gloom of minimal employment.

In tough times you have to make your own opportunities while you can, and sometimes you’re lucky enough to get a helping hand as well. In the case of Young Pines, it’s a bit of both. The collective, made up of creatives from Mercy’s intern programme, have been taken under the agency’s wing and had the chance to work on some live briefs - real life money-can’t-buy experience of what it’s like to work in creative industries (and at one of the city’s best agencies, too).

The interns - poets, illustrators and designers - have come together for a self-titled exhibition of their work, set to open at the Liverpool School of Art’s rather swish building on Duckinfield Street. Based around their new self-published book ‘The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife’, it uses mythology and folk tales as a starting point for (some admittedly NSFW) prose, artwork and drawings. There’s also audio recordings of the book’s poems, and unique sound art in what we’re reliably told is a “fantasy room lit by UV”. We’re sure we saw something like that in a basement club in Soho once.

‘Young Pines’ runs from 15th December through to 23rd December.
