The Weekly Seven: 5th November 2012

Clinic, beautiful post-hurricane photography, Liverpool ONE's ice extravaganza, and more. All the things we approve of this week.

Clinic - Static Gallery, 10th November

GIG Liverpool’s legendary weirdo-pop gang make a triumphant return this month with great new album ‘Free Reign’ - to celebrate, they’re doing a homecoming show at Static Gallery in the form of a gig-slash-installation. Featuring a production line of cassette recorders, the band’s set is being recorded live to tape, and you’ll be able to buy all sorts of goodies. A must see. More information

#icefestival, Liverpool ONE

EVENT It’s official: winter’s here. We’ve got our big coat on, and we’re roasting our nuts by the fire pretty regularly. Liverpool ONE’s winter wonderland this year is a big-budget big deal: an ice slide, ice bar, ice rink and all sorts of other stuff, and kicks off this week. Read our preview

Exploring Powerless Manhattan

PHOTOGRAPHY During the blackout following Hurricane Sandy, NYC photographer JC Lemon got on his bike, pedalled round his neighbourhood, and shot these beautiful, simple shots of a powerless city powering on through the darkness. Go to website

Storyville - Despicable Dick

FILM A charming documentary on Dick Kuchera, all-round rascal and flawed family guy, who seeks to right all the wrongs he’s committed over the past 50 years. And boy, he’s annoyed a lot of people. It’s a moving, sometimes hilariously funny, look at forgiveness and the turning over of a new leaf. Watch on iPlayer

Karine Polwart - Traces

ALBUM Sentimental and strident, Polwart’s politically and personally tinged folk will linger long after you’ve played it. A gorgeous collection of songs from one of Britain’s finest singer songwriters. www.karinepolwart.com

The Verge

WEBSITE A crisp online magazine covering ‘the intersection of technology, science, art, and culture’, that’s not ashamed to run long-form features and hit-hungry columns. We love it. www.theverge.com

Melody’s Echo Chamber - Melody’s Echo Chamber

ALBUM Parisian chanteuse makes brilliant Stereolab-tinged dreampop music. It’s a simple formula, and the results are achingly lovely, as seen in the stonkingly great ‘I Follow You’ (above), taken from her self-titled album.
