Radar: Mark Greenwood’s LAD BROKE

Many of you will have lost ridiculous fistfuls of money after ‘having a flutter’ on a horse last week. It’s an annual treat for most people, in the vague hope they might get a few quid back, but for some it’s a daily, consuming spiral of hope and disappointment.

Artist Mark Greenwood takes to Camp and Furnace this weekend for a durational performance based on this all-too-common ritual. Presented by local creative agency Mercy and held over a 48 hour period, Greenwood’s set to reflect the heart-stopping, adrenaline rush of gambling alongside the more destructive nature of placing a bet: one of false hopes and feedback loops of profit and loss. Greenwood’s spent the best part of a decade working in a bookies, so he’s seen every possible angle and situation that gambling can produce.

We’re promised that elements of this performance will be pretty physically extreme, though Mercy tell us that “although this is clearly a committed performance from Mark, for the first 24 hours of the piece the work will be suitable for people off all ages and persuations. After this, we will put a notice up that the will be content people may find unsettling. At root, this is a performance-writing work which concerns itself with the ‘writerly’ act of betting on horses”.

So if you want something accessible, stick with Little Girl Giant barging her way around town. If you’re looking for something a bit deeper and thought provoking this weekend, however, then this one’s for you.
