FILM Nowadays, with megabucks advertising campaigns for the likes of Iron Man and god-knows-what-else superhero movies, it’s becoming difficult for indie films to be heard above the noise. So we’re excited about this new approach from British indie A Field In England (directed by Ben Wheatley, who did Sightseers and Kill List), which is doing a huge cross-platform launch on Friday: cinema, DVD, view-on-demand online, and a screening on freebie channel Film4, who funded the movie. It feels like a bit of a watershed moment, and the film itself looks great, too: a Civil War trip involving magic mushrooms and Reece Shearsmith. Trailer below.
Watch on Film4, Friday 5th July at 10.35pm or if you prefer a bigger screen, at FACT at 6.30pm.
ALBUM STREAM Being talked about in fevered tones right across the music industry, this grizzly thirtysomething US native makes electronic-tinged country - dark, dirty and utterly engrossing, somewhere between Johnny Cash and Depeche Mode. Stream on NPR

WEB STUFF This year the BBC went all out on their Glastonbury coverage, and the website is a complete treasure trove of brilliant full sets. Our favourites: The XX’s surprisingly muscular headline set from the Other Stage, Phoenix’s joyful pop, the gorgeous Cat Power, and Portishead’s chilly trip-hop ballads. Plus local’uns Ady Suleiman and The Sundowners, too. More information

COOL STUFF Our weekly Kickstarter crush this week lands on map² - which is like a hard copy Google Maps. A fantastic little idea, it takes a normal paper map and, by unfolding, lets you zoom in on a specific area. For those of us too stubborn to be glued to our smartphone, it’s a great little alternative. More information
INTERESTING THING This interactive online mini-mag courtesy of the New York Times not only looks gorgeous, but is really fascinating. Basically: background stories behind who invented the world’s brilliant things, like ATM machines and breath mints. Unmissable. More information
