Tall ships 2012 - Pelican

Mersey River Festival Returns

Get set for another Big Weekend, as we take to the river again, for three days of free festivities, tall ships, Russian masterpieces and wild wake-boarding...

The tall ship are back! The Music of the Waterfront is back! The Mersey River Festival is back!

With the weather set fair, it’s heading to be another amazing weekend in the city. Get down there early, we predict a bit of a scrum.

This year, there’s a new World Music Stage at the Pier Head playing sunshine-ready African, Indian and Arabic music and dance. There’s free taster sessions at the Watersports Centre, should you hanker after a kayak, sea shanties at the dock, a wake-boarding challenge, and extended opening hours at Tate for the debut weekend of their Chagall, Modern Master exhibition. Can’t wait for that one.

But really, it’s all about the ships innit? As part of the Mersey River Festival (Friday 7 – Sunday 9) half a dozen Tall Ships will grace the River Mersey as Liverpool becomes one of the host ports for the Irish Sea Fleet – Maritime Tour 2013. The weekend will not only see ships from Ireland, but also from Denmark, France and Belgium.

Add to that a splash of acrobatic displays from Russian aircrafts buzzing the river, colourful street theatre, wake boarders (think Total Wipeout, but without overweight IT workers) and a canoe polo tournament.

The River Festival will also coincide with Music on the Waterfront, with Katie Melua (who’s counted every single bicycle in the city), Nell Bryden, Russell Watson, KT Tunstall (we still have a soft spot for her) and The Christians. Not bad for nowt, really is it?

On Sunday it’s the turn of the Brouhaha International Carnival to weave its magic, the Liverpool Arab Arts Festival’s intoxicating blend of Egyptian dancers and Lebanese Hip Hop, and the Sights and Sounds of India, bringing even more exotic music and magic to the Albert Dock and Pier Head.

That’ll be the River Mersey - teeming with life again.
