Radar: Neil Young & Crazy Horse at Liverpool Echo Arena

Excuse us for a moment while we weep with excitement: Neil Young's coming to Liverpool this August. NEIL YOUNG.

In the great list of rock ‘n’ roll legends, they don’t come more badass than Neil Young. His singular, brilliant vision has spanned decades worth of albums, side projects and collaborations, and he’s finally visiting Liverpool this summer.

Along with long-time cohorts Crazy Horse (who he hasn’t performed with over here for about two decades), 67-year old Young will be heading out on a summer arena tour, and there’s a rare date at the ECHO Arena scheduled - the opening show for the first ever Liverpool International Music Festival.

Young’s most recent high profile UK gig was headlining Glastonbury in 2009, in which over the course of about 13 jaw-dropping hours, Young hurtled through a career-spanning, amazing back catalogue. Expect a similarly thrilling run-through in Liverpool on 18th August. We can’t wait.

Saw him the last time he played here, at the Empire in 1973. He played the whole of ‘Tonight’s the night’ which wasn’t out and which none of us had ever heard! Retrospectively wonderful but a challenge at the time. Especially after the crowd pleasing support act, the Eagles!

— Lovely central performances ensure that Beautiful Thing is still engaging, though time has lent a familiarity to the play that diminishes it.
